Recently, 65 coffee roasters from around the world gathered in a vaulted loft above the Johan & Nyström roastery, just outside of Stockholm. They were there to discuss topics ranging from agronomy to direct trade and Nordic roasting philosophies. The Nordic Roaster Forum is an annual event that began last year in Göteborg as a roaster specific extension of the larger Nordic Barista Cup event, which took place earlier this year in Copenhagen.
This years’ forum included talks by a coffee farmer from Brazil, agronomists from El Salvador and Kenya, a professor in coffee genetics from Italy, a green coffee buyer from Norway and several prominent Nordic roasters. Many of the talks were complemented with a cupping (coffee tasting) related to the speaker’s presentation. This way attendees could taste and discuss the content of the lecture in a social and enlightening atmosphere.
The organization’s goal is to “be a part of creating a forum in which people can meet, bond and achieve further knowledge.” The small size of the event allows intimate conversations and fosters relationships within the industry, while giving all of the attendees an opportunity to learn from each other directly. In their effort to share as much knowledge as possible, all of the lectures are filmed and published on the internet for everyone to watch and learn about a range of current discussions about coffee from field to fika.
